9:30am for a 9:45am start from the RBG Centre.

Parking and meeting spot:

RBG - Main Entrance

RBG Centre, 680 Plains Rd. West, Burlington.

Meet at the front entrance of the RBG Centre.  Note the centre’s washrooms will not be open until after our hike.

Cost: Free parking for all hikers.  If you choose to explore the RBG Centre after the hike, admittance is free for RBG members with a membership card and photo ID.   Otherwise, the fee is $19.50/adult or $16.50/senior.  Booking in advance to see the ‘Alice in Bloomland’ display is necessary.

2 hours (hike time) or 4 hours (hike plus indoor garden/café)

TERRAIN:

Easy / Moderate / Challenging

Moderate. The trail varies: from gravel, hard-packed earth, a couple of wooden bridges and maybe ice or even mud.  Hilly in places, sometimes loose stones/rocks/tree roots.  May have snow/ice.  Be prepared.  Bring icers.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Point of interests

Hike or hike and view the indoor gardens.  Up to you.  We’ll be starting at Cherry Hill Gate to explore the Hendrie Valley trails.  With any luck we’ll see the owl in its nest, a river otter and several bird species.  Bring binoculars if you like. 

There are no washrooms until the end of the hike at the RBG Centre (admission fees will apply).  After the hike, stop by the Greenhouse Café for lunch or visit the ‘Alice in Bloomland’ exhibit (advance booking required).

REGISTRATION REQUIRED

Yes. A Must.  Leaders appreciate early registration and at least 24 hours before the event.

CANCELLATION

  If your plans change, please self-cancel as soon as possible so that other HOC members may take your spot.

  The club may cancel due to bad weather that may impact the safety of participants or due to low attendance.

REGISTRATION OPENS

Two weeks before the hike.  Up to 15 hikers are welcome to participate.

WHAT TO BRING

  Wear supportive hiking boots with good tread. Hiking poles may be helpful.

  Traction device for hiking boots such as Yaktrax or Icers are mandatory in slippery, snowy or icy conditions.

  Dress in layers according to weather.

  Wear or bring waterproof rainwear.

  Bring snacks and WATER!

GUIDING NOTES:


HIKE PACE - Leisure: 3 km/hr or less. Moderate: 3-4 km/hr or Fast: 4-5km/hr. All paces are average and depending on the terrain.


TERRAIN - Easy: mostly flat and usually good footing (i.e. rail trails, Confederation Park, Bay Front Park), Moderate: some hills and/or poor footing (Bruce Trail, Dundas Valley, etc.) and Challenging: steep hills and strenuous footing (Bruce Trail, some trails in Short Hills, Dundas Valley and Red Hill Valley). Please note variations can be expected with weather conditions.


Attention Non-Members:  If you are thinking about becoming a member, The Halton Outdoor Club invites you to take part in up to two club activities as a Non-Member. After that, please join our club so we can welcome you as a member. 

Registration is required for all events, and you will have to agree to the waiver of participation when registering.


Attention Past Members:  You are not entitled to two trial activities. Please renew your membership to take advantage of all that the Club has to offer.
