MEETING PLACE OR PARKING LOCATION

Parking on Fifth Ave and Victoria Ave. Some parking along the fence of the water treatment plant.

DISTANCE

Approx. 10 kms

PACE:

Leisurely / Moderate / Fast

Moderate, 4 kms per hour average.

DURATION APPROX

Approximately 2.5 hours including stops as required.

TERRAIN:

Easy / Moderate / Challenging

Moderate: Trails are varied. Tricky footing in the roughed parts of the trail. Rocky and roots. Also some gentle and wide trails to enjoy the views.

TYPE OF HIKE:

Generally there and back with few loops in the Ball’s Falls Conservation Area.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Point of interests

Primarily along the Bruce Trail through beautiful hardwood forest and Falls. Get to know the past of a thriving industrial economy of Glen Elgin in the 1800’s -1900’s. Now the Ball’s Fall Conservation Area. Will take a side walk along the Forest Frolic Trail. Will stop for snacks/water along the trails and at approx. the half point stop for washroom brake at the Ball’s Falls Centre for Conservation.

REGISTRATION REQUIRED

Yes. A Must.  Leaders appreciate early registration and at least 24 hours before the event.

CANCELLATION

  If your plans change, please self-cancel as soon as possible so that other HOC members may take your spot.

  The club may cancel due to bad weather that may impact the safety of participants or due to low attendance.

REGISTRATION OPENS

2 weeks before the hike. Up to 15 participants are welcome to join the event.

WHAT TO BRING

  Must wear supportive hiking boots with good tread. Hiking poles are recommended.

  Dress in layers according to weather

  Bring snacks, and plenty of water

  It can be muddy so to keep your car clean bring a change of shoes and plastic bag to place your muddy hiking boots.

IMPORTANT COVID REMINDERs

The club’s Covid-19 Safety Guidelines will be observed. 

GUIDING NOTES:

HIKE PACE -  Leisure: 3 km/hr or less. Moderate: 3-4 km/hr or Fast: 4-5km/hr. All paces are average and depending on the terrain.

TERRAIN - Easy: mostly flat and usually good footing (i.e. rail trails, Confederation Park, Bay Front Park), Moderate: some hills and/or poor footing (Bruce Trail, Dundas Valley, etc.) and Challenging: steep hills and strenuous footing (Bruce Trail, some trails in Short Hills, Dundas Valley and Red Hill Valley). Please note variations can be expected with weather conditions.
