Winter Rendezvous Hilton Falls

Ski/Snowshoe/Hike

Tuesday Feb 8, 2022

Arrival Time: Between 9:30 – 10:00 a.m.

This is NOT a guided activity.

The plan: HOC members rendezvous at Hilton Falls Conservation Area on the morning of Feb 8th, arriving anytime between 9:30 and 10:00 and staying for 3 hours (maximum time allowed). You can choose whether to xc ski, snowshoe, or hike.

Think of this as being like a ski/snowshoe day trip, where we all arrive at a destination and do our own thing, BUT you have the opportunity to share the trails with other HOC members. Perhaps once you see who else is registered you will plan to meet up or just take your chances and join someone upon arrival. You could also organize your own small group and register together in a specific time slot.

Registration: There are two parts:

1.   You must register on-line to book a visit to Hilton Falls Conservation Area

·       Go to parkvisit.ca Reservation (parkpassproject.com)

·       Choose Hilton Falls

·       Choose whether you are a Member or Non-member of Conservation Halton (enter your membership number if you are a member)

·       Choose Feb 8

·       Choose a time slot that starts between 9:30 and 10:00. If these times are full, you can try earlier than 9:30

·       Pay on-line: Adults $9.50. Seniors $7.50

2.     Register on the HOC Events Calendar. This allows everyone to see who else is coming and gives us an idea of total numbers attending.

HOC is not limiting numbers but there may be restrictions for Hilton Falls so we advise you to book as soon as possible. You may self cancel from both registrations. If you cancel your Hilton Falls reservation, you will receive a refund.

Upon arrival: Gear up and start your chosen activity. You are bound to meet others at the start or on the trail.  We will not be gathering as a group as we typically do. If you see Jim and Patti at the start or out on the trails, say hi and feel free to ask them any questions.

Terrain and Conditions:  Most trails are relatively wide, gently rolling, smooth and very conducive to xc skiing/snowshoeing. Hilton Falls advertises 15 kms of groomed ski trails and tries to maintain tracks, but they may be “skied in” to varying degrees, depending on weather. There is a significant ascent at the start of the trail and a descent at the end which skiers may choose to walk. There are some optional Bruce Trail sections that are more rugged, very pretty and great for snowshoeing but not recommended for xc skiing.  We cannot forecast the actual snow and trail conditions in advance but will try to give update prior to our trip.

Notes: If you are hiking, icers (traction devices) and poles will be useful. If you plan to ski or snowshoe but conditions are questionable, bring hiking boots etc. so you have an alternate activity. Carry water, snacks, extra layers, and a mask.

Highlights: Plan to visit the falls which can be quite spectacular in winter. A fire may be lit at the falls for your enjoyment.

Hilton Falls Map: You can download and print this map to bring along with you: TrailGuide_HiltonFalls (7).pdf

The club’s Covid-19 Safety Guidelines will be observed.
