NOTE FROM MANAGER: In the September newsletter, this trip was advertised but unfortunately, we had to change hotels at the last minute, as the first hotel required us to sign a contract which was not beneficial to the Club.  This resulted in a change of date and a change in the hotel.  We are now using a hotel which has provided the Club with great service for several years.  Sorry about any confusion this may cause.

Ottawa Skiing Weekend

by Paul Lewis

February 23 to 26, 2017

The Halton Outdoor Club is visiting Ottawa again just in time for Canada’s 150th Birthday!

Instead of visiting during Winterlude, we decided to change things up this year.

In addition to skiing and snowshoeing, bring your blades and skate Ottawa’s famous Rideau Canal. http://rcs.ncc-ccn.ca  The canal should be open for skating still, especially as a cold winter is forecast this year! We can also checkout the various museums Ottawa has to offer.  Check out www.ottawamusuems.com for more information on Ottawa’s great museums.  You can also check out www.ottawa2017.ca for details on what is happening for Canada’s 150th Birthday.

On the way to Ottawa we will stop in the Brockville area and ski at the Triangle Ski Club – www.triangleskiclub.org, with 35km of picturesque trails and 6km of snowshoe trails. In Ottawa we will ski and snowshoe at Gatineau Hills on the Quebec side with its 50 groomed and track-set trails amounting to an impressive 190km – www.ncc-ccn.gc.ca/places-to-visit/gatineau-park/things-to-do/cross-country-skiing-gatineau-park

We will also ski at Nakkertok Cross Country Ski Club with its 80km of groomed and wilderness trails – www.nakkertok.ca

For a change of scenery, a few of us will be skiing, just the trails on the North Side.  You will have a choice on which side you want to ski.

All three ski centres have a wide variety of trails that are appropriate for every level of skier from beginner to expert. On the Friday and Saturday ski days, the coach will depart the ski areas at both 2pm and 4pm for those who wish to take part in skating on the Rideau Canal or sight-see.

We will stay at the Capital Hill Hotel & Suites at 88 Albert Street, which is in the heart of downtown Ottawa and within walking distance of Parliament Hill, Byward Market, and the Rideau Canal – www.capitalhill.com

Included will be one dinner on the first night of arrival, one lunch on the day of departure and three full hot breakfasts. This allows you to sample two dinners in some of Ottawa’s super restaurants located within walking distance of the hotel.

The hotel is three and a half star and each room is equipped with free high speed wireless internet connection. If you leave your laptop at home, you are welcome to use the business centre, with 24 hour access, free computer use, free high speed internet service and free printer privileges. In addition to the above conveniences, all guest rooms and suites have voicemail, hairdryers, coffee makers, and 24 hour access to a Fitness Room. To start your day off right you can relax with the daily newspaper available at the Front Desk, or take it down to the Bibliothèque CafĂ©, where guests of the hotel are offered 10% off their meals.

The package includes return transportation by coach, transportation to ski areas, accommodation for three nights, three breakfasts, one dinner and one lunch, two full days of skiing, two half-days of skiing, all taxes, all gratuities, and all trail fees. Room gratuity is not included.

Cost of the trip is as follows: $560 per person double occupancy and $750 per person single occupancy.  We are leaving Thursday, February 22 from 777 Walkers Line at 8:00am, planning to arrive in Brockville at noon for some skiing until approximately 4:30pm, and then arriving in Ottawa about 6:00pm. On Sunday February 25 we will depart Ottawa at 3:00pm to arrive back in Burlington about 9:30pm.

To book, please use the Trip-by-Road form and send with a cheque for $150 per person and another cheque for the balance, post-dated for January 2, 2017.  Make all cheques payable to the Halton Outdoor Club. Cancellations received before January 2, 2017 will result in a full refund minus a $25 processing fee. Cancellations after January 2, 2017 could result in the loss of your first deposit if a substitute cannot be found, as well as any charges the Club incurs on your behalf. Cancellation out of a double arrangement may result in you having to pay the difference to a single rate if no substitute can be found.

If you require further information, please call Bonnie at the Club, 905 634-2012.
