    CYCLE THE LOIRE VALLEY

    We will be pedalling along the Loire River in the “Garden of France”, a region of unparalleled beauty and cultural significance, covering a minimum of 210 KMs (up to 386 KMs) over 9 days on mostly flatter and paved terrain. The Loire Valley, dotted with magnificent châteaux, is a UNESCO World Heritage site, recognized for its historical importance and architectural prowess.

    This is a guided tour with an English-speaking guide and a dedicated support vehicle to carry our luggage and provide assistance if needed.

    This is a longer than usual cycle trip with 9 cycling days offered. However, there are 4 optional cycle days in which members can choose to remain in the local town for the day.

    Accommodation: 10 nights in charming 3-star hotels; most meals included except for 4 dinners and 1 lunch 


    Cost:  

    • $7,600 for double occupancy
    • $8,450 for single occupancy.
    • Note: These prices include HOC registration fees of $90, of which $25 is non-refundable.
    • E-Bike rental $275

    Number of participants: 20 total, including the leader. Six of these spots are available for single occupancy.

    We will use a combination Agreement Forest and Hilton Falls Conservation Area Trails to complete the loop. This forest area is beautiful, with easy to more challenging hiking and biking trails. We will see late summer flowers, possibly mushrooms and fungi and early Autumn colours. One of my favourite hike locations.

However, it is recommended (and saves money on gate fees) to make an on-line reservation with Halton Conservation Authority Parks to enter the area.     Moderate: Trails are varied. Tricky footing in the rough parts of the trail. Rocky and roots. Also some gentle and wide trails to enjoy the views.

    Generally there and back with few loops in the Ball’s Falls Conservation Area.

    GENERAL DESCRIPTION

    Point of interests

    Primarily along the Bruce Trail through beautiful hardwood forest and Falls. Get to know the past of a thriving industrial economy of Glen Elgin in the 1800’s -1900’s. Now the Ball’s Fall Conservation Area. Will take a sidewalk along the Forest Frolic Trail. Will stop for snacks/water along the trails and at approx. the half point stop for washroom break at the Ball’s Falls Centre for Conservation.

    Yes. A Must.  Leaders appreciate early registration and at least 24 hours before the event.

    CANCELLATION

    If your plans change, please self-cancel as soon as possible so that other HOC members may take your spot.

    The club may cancel due to bad weather that may impact the safety of participants or due to low attendance.

    WHAT TO BRING

    Must wear supportive hiking boots with good tread.

     Hiking poles are recommended.

    Dress in layers according to weather

    Bring snacks, and plenty of water

    It can be muddy so to keep your car clean bring a change of shoes and plastic bag to place your muddy hiking boots.

    GUIDING NOTES:

    HIKE PACE - Leisure: 3 km/hr. or less. Moderate: 3-4 km/hr. or Fast: 4-5km/hr. All paces are an average and will depend on the terrain and weather. Rest stops are not included in the overall pace.

    TERRAIN - Easy: mostly flat and usually good footing (i.e. rail trails, Confederation Park, Bay Front Park), Moderate: some hills and/or poor footing (Bruce Trail, Dundas Valley, etc.) and Challenging: steep long hills and strenuous footing (some parts of the Bruce Trail, some trails in Short Hills, up and down the escarpment). Please note variations can be expected with wet or icy conditions.

    Level 3 - Long, with breaks as needed, these rides are over 60km, more than 18 km/hr on average or road rides where speeds are always over 20 km/hr. on average.  Check the ride description for more details.

    Here we go again! The Caledon section of the Bruce Trail offers spectacular views, rolling hills, farmland, mature woodlots and deep ravines. Eleven hikes will cover the “70 kms” and several of the side trails over three seasons this year.

    Hike #9 will have some great ups and downs as we pass by the Hockley Valley Ski Resort and plan our way through the scenic holes of the Golf Course. Bonus points for finding golf balls!

    Hard packed mostly flat gravel trail, some paved and some riding on quiet roads Join us as we travel the Georgian Trail from Thornbury through Meaford and a portion of the Tom Thompson Trail.

    This ride can be completed as a day trip or you can book your own overnight accommodation for Friday and/ or Saturday nights to combine all three Collingwood Area rides.   PLEASE NOTE you must register separately for each day you wish to join the Collingwood rides this weekend

    We will hike Meadow Trail turning right (north) at trail junction and continue as it follows Mill Pond Side Trail (Bruce Trail) and loop back. From trail junction we will follow Bruce Trail to Dominion Trail. Short out and back to waterfall and return. South on Bruce Trail and gradually loop back to trail junction then Trail to parking lot. Varied and scenic terrain.

    From the park, we head south on Neyagawa Blvd.  We cross under Neyagawa and do a small part of the 16 Mile Creek Heritage Trail East Bank (gravel/packed dirt) before going onto the bridge that goes over Upper Middle Road.  We will then continue south on the 16 Mile Creek Trail overlooking Glen Abbey golf course.

    Get a full body work-out.

    Here we go again! The Caledon section of the Bruce Trail offers spectacular views, rolling hills, farmland, mature woodlots and deep ravines. Eleven hikes will cover the “70 kms” and several of the side trails over three seasons this year.

    Hike #10 will have some great variety to break up the Ups and Downs. There will be three lengthy Side Trails (Tom East, Isabel East, and Cam Snell) mixed in with the main Bruce Trail. Ponds, streams, rolling woodlands, valleys!!

    Part of the Hendrie Valley Nature Reserve. The wetlands and marshes are popular for birdwatching. Grindstone Creek is popular for salmon spawning. Wide trails for the most part.

    Here we go again! The Caledon section of the Bruce Trail offers spectacular views, rolling hills, farmland, mature woodlots and deep ravines. Eleven hikes will cover the “70 kms” and several of the side trails over three seasons this year.

    Hike #11. A reforestation project, stunning vistas and rugged crevices are just some of the highlights that we will see today. And the last of the fall colors!

    This was planned to be The Finally of the series, but Mother Nature had other ideas. We will prematurely celebrate at KM 72.4 and maybe a pub stop in Mono Centre??

    HIKE PACE - Leisure: 3 km/hr or less. Moderate: 3-4 km/hr or Fast: 4-5km/hr. All paces are average and depending on the terrain.


    TERRAIN - Easy: mostly flat and usually good footing (i.e. rail trails, Confederation Park, Bay Front Park), Moderate: some hills and/or poor footing (Bruce Trail, Dundas Valley, etc.) and Challenging: steep hills and strenuous footing (Bruce Trail, some trails in Short Hills, Dundas Valley and Red Hill Valley). Please note variations can be expected with weather conditions.

    Park in the lot closest to the water. Meet at the stylized ship’s mast with “Waterfront Trail” written on the sail which is located in the corner of the parking lot, close to the water and the railway yard.

    Leaders appreciate early registration and at least 24 hrs before the event.

    CANCELLATION

       If your plans change, please self-cancel as soon as possible so that other HOC members may take your spot.

       The club may cancel due to bad weather that may impact the safety of participants or due to low attendance.

    REGISTRATION OPENS

    Two weeks before the hike. Up to 20 hikers are welcome to participate in this event.

    WHAT TO BRING

       Hiking boots or good walking shoes

       Carry: Snacks, water, extra layers, especially wind and rain protection.

    2026 ITALY / AUSTRIA SKI TRIP

    Friday, January 23 Saturday, February 7, 2026

    Registration opens Sunday, March 30th

    Leaders:


    We are returning to Toblach, Italy and Seefeld, Austria to ski some of the finest cross-country trail networks in Europe. Other winter activity opportunities include extensive winter hiking trails, snowshoeing, downhill skiing, and sightseeing.


    Accommodation: One week at the Hotel Villa Monica in Toblach, Italy with half board (all breakfasts and dinners). One week at Hotel Bergland in Seefeld, Austria with an all-inclusive package (see details on the Trip Information Sheet).


    Cost: 

    $ 6,790 for double occupancy

    $ 7,320 for single occupancy.


    Number of participants: 24 total, including the leaders. Two of these spots are reserved for single occupancy.

    ENGLAND HIKING TRIP
    Thursday May 28 – Sunday June 14, 2026

    Registration opens Sunday May 25 (a stroke past midnight on the night of May 24)

    We are heading to two beautiful parts of England: the scenic Peak District National Park and The Cornish Coast near the idyllic town of St. Ives. Accommodation during both weeks will be at HF Holidays country houses, where we will enjoy a wide variety of hiking options. We will travel from one area to the other, by coach bus, stopping for a night in the town of Plymouth.

    In each location, well-trained volunteer guides lead 3 levels of hikes on every hiking day. There are opportunities to explore local areas and sightsee on your own.

    Accommodation: One week at ‘The Peveril of the Peak’, Dovedale, Derbyshire in the Peak District and our second week will be based at “Chy Morvah”, Cornish for “house by the sea”, HF’s country house in St. Ives, Cornwall.   

    Cost:  $6832 for double occupancy and $7063 for single occupancy.

    Number of participants: 26 total, including the leaders. Eight of these spots are reserved for single occupancy.
