FEBRUARY MIDWEEK GETAWAY – KAWARTHA

Tuesday, Feb 15 – Wednesday, Feb 16, 2022

Leaders: Sue and Frank Elias

Our midweek getaway features two days of skiing or snowshoeing in North Kawartha township, traveling by luxury coach. Kawartha Nordic, is a lovely nordic ski and snowshoe club located 40 minutes north of Peterborough. Some of you may recall the Club skied at Kawartha Nordic on their way home from the ski trip to the Haliburton Highlands, a few years ago and everyone enjoyed the experience.  So, take a couple of days off from your usual routine or job and come and join us, hopefully it will be peak snow conditions!

The February Midweek Getaway trip will be subject to the HOC Covid Guidelines for skiing and snowshoeing as published on the Club website. Please read these guidelines prior to registering for this trip. The ski/snowshoe Covid Guidelines include, but are not limited to the following:

·        Proof of double vaccination is required before boarding the bus

·        Masks will be worn on the bus at all times unless eating or drinking

·        Participants must answer Covid related screening questions before boarding the bus

·        Use of resort chalets and other facilities may be limited

·        Group meals may be modified and/or not offered

In order to be sensitive to complications posed by the pandemic, the Club has negotiated cancellation policies that allow the Club to cancel the trip without penalty, up to 30 days prior to the trip start date, allowing your payments to be fully refunded. Should the trip be cancelled, at any time, due to Government imposed travel restrictions, participants will receive a full refund.

The Trails:

The Kawartha Nordic is a "not-for-profit" organization operated by numerous volunteers (much like the Halton Outdoor Club). Founded in 1976 by a group of avid skiers, Kawartha Nordic now offers 45 kms of classic and skate trails, as well as 9 km of snowshoe trails through scenic Canadian Shield wilderness.  The trails are suitable for all levels of skiers and snowshoers. Kawartha Nordic owns 350 acres of land and holds a "land use" permit for their remaining trails on crown land.  They are fortunate enough to have a Piston Bulley groomer, greatly improving the quality of grooming and the overall skiing experience.

Itinerary:

Tuesday, February 15: The bus will depart Burlington (Mainway Arena) at 8:00 a.m., arriving at Kawartha Nordic late morning. We will be taking the 407 to miss rush hour on the 401. We will be greeted by a member of the club to give us more information about the trails. We will enjoy the rest of the day on the trails and depart at 4:00 p.m. to drive to the Holiday Inn in Peterborough. We will be spending the night in Peterborough where dinner is on your own. There are a number of restaurants and grocery stores within walking distance of the hotel.  More information will follow.

Note: As of press time, the Kawartha Nordic covid screening will be required on both days. This may be done online if you can or else can be done at their location. Kawartha Nordic will have the main lodge and trailside cabins closed. Washrooms and outhouses are available for use and there will be outdoor picnic tables provided throughout the ski area. Remember to bring your lunch as there is no food for sale. You may eat lunch on the bus.

Wednesday, February 16: We will depart the Holiday Inn at approximately 9:00 a.m. to spend the day, once again, at Kawartha Nordic departing at approximately 3:30 p.m. to return to Burlington.

Accommodation:

We will be at the Holiday Inn – Waterfront, located in downtown Peterborough on the Otonabee River.  The hotel offers a saltwater pool that connects to the outdoors even in winter, as well as an indoor whirlpool and fitness centre.  Unfortunately, due to the Covid pandemic, the Holiday Inn is not able to provide breakfast.  However, there are restaurants directly opposite the hotel to accommodate breakfast (e.g.  Smitty's and Tim Hortons).  All rooms have a mini-fridge and coffee-maker.

The rate for two days of skiing is: double occupancy $225.00 and for single occupancy it is $310.00

The rate for two days of snowshoeing is: double occupancy $200.00 and for single occupancy it is $290.00

This is the first time that the club has offered a price choice for snowshoers due to the very different pricing of the trail fees at the Kawartha Nordic. Many locations do not offer separate pricing.

Note: The snowshoe category applies to those participants who exclusively snowshoe. If you are bringing skis on the trip, then please do not register for the snowshoe category. If you register as a skier, you may also snowshoe but the reverse does not apply.

This Trip covers the bus, one-night accommodation and the trail fees.  Costs not included are dinner on the evening of Tuesday and breakfast on the morning of Wednesday, and lunches on both days plus any other personal items you may wish to purchase.

Cancellation Policy:

You may cancel your trip and expect a full refund, minus a $25.00 processing fee (per application), up until January 15, 2022.  After that date, you will be responsible for any costs that the Club incurs on your behalf.  This could include costs for transportation, accommodation, leader subsidy, etc.  If you cancel after the cancellation date, we will attempt to find a replacement from the wait list however, there are no guarantees.

In the event that the trip is cancelled by the club at any point, you will be given a full refund.

If the trip experiences inclement weather that interferes with our planned activities, the trip will NOT be cancelled. Leaders will try to find suitable alternative activities.

While in progress, if the trip experiences unexpected circumstances that are beyond our control, that result in changes to the itinerary and unexpected expenses, members are responsible for any extra expenses that may be incurred.
