Saturday August 17. Bruce Trail End-to-End – El Camino Magnifico

Hike #1 – Niagara Section, Queenston Heights to Welland Canal 

Start: 9:00 AM, arrive by 8:45 AM

Meeting Place: Gravel parking lot in Thorold on the north side of Glendale Ave. immediately east of the Welland Canal lift bridge.

Car Shuttle: We'll start with a car shuttle from the meeting place to the starting point of the hike. The hike will end with a car shuttle from the Welland Canal to Queenston Heights to retrieve the cars left there in the morning.

Type of Hike, Length, Pace, and Duration:  A 4-hr, 18.2 km linear hike at 3-4 km per hr, with pauses for rest, refreshment, and relief.

Terrain: Varies from level to rocky with tree roots, but is mostly easy. There is only one steep descent on a switch-back trail.

Overview: The first hike takes us from the Niagara River to the outskirts of St. David's and through Woodend Conservation area plus a golf course to the Welland Canal. The best views are from Queenston Heights to the lower Niagara River and from the edge of the Welland Canal up and down the seaway.

Requirements: Hikers must be HOC members and pre-register for the hike. Wear hiking boots and clothing suitable for the weather of the day. Bring plenty of water and snacks.

Voluntary Social: At the end of the day, we'll gather at a nearby pub to celebrate with food and drink.
